We hear all the time – ask and you shall receive.
Obviously, there is a big spirituality belief around this statement (which I personally also believe) but in this post, I’m going to talk about science and how our brain actually works.
Have you ever bought a new car (or anything for that matter) and after you bought it, you start seeing it everywhere? It’s not a coincidence.
There’s a part of the brain called the reticular activating system that subconsciously acts as a filter. There are so many things that happen to us and around us every day that our reticular activating system filters out what our brain thinks is not important, and puts it out of our awareness.
Has anyone ever said to you ‘the sound of that clock is so loud’ and then all of a sudden, all you can hear is the clock? The sound of the clock was always there, but the reason you couldn’t hear the clock before was because your reticular activating system had filtered it out; it wasn’t in your awareness.
When you think about these everyday experiences, you realise how many noises, situations and opportunities are around us every day that we aren’t consciously aware of. The process of visualisation tricks the brain to activate the reticular activating system and tell it exactly what you want it to filter in and bring into to your awareness.
Everything you visualise, the brain believes is your reality because the reticular activating system doesn’t know the difference between ‘real events’ and ‘visualised events’. This means if you visualise running a 100-metre sprint, your brain thinks you are actually running a 100-metre sprint! This sounds amazing, right? Well it can be, if you use it in the right way.
Your reticular activating system is working in the background regardless of whether you activate it in the direction you want or not, so be careful because it can work against you if you’re too focused on what you don’t want.
If you’re continuously playing out a scenario in your mind that you’re launching a course or new service and no one will buy it, you’re sending that message to your brain (which can’t differentiate whether it’s a thought or your reality) – this is a dangerous pre-launch activity!
The same goes if you’re playing out a scenario in your head that people won’t pay for your premium prices. Your brain will get to work and filter in all the people saying no to your premium prices because that’s where your attention is. It will filter accordingly to your thoughts even though there’s people all around you willing and able to invest with you, but those people are being filtered out of your awareness and you’re missing all those opportunities. It’s that simple. It’s science.
Instead, use it to your advantage. Imagine what would be possible for you if you bought awareness to new client opportunities?
The message you send your reticular activating system whether it’s good, bad, conscious or subconscious; is extremely powerful and will get to work regardless.
Take 5-10 minutes each day to paint a picture in your mind of exactly what you want.
Visualise the outcome as if you’ve already received it.
Let’s say you want 4 new clients this month. Visualise yourself receiving the enquiries, getting on the phone to chat with them one at a time, each of them saying yes then you preparing their invoice. Play out each part of the scene as if it was happening right now. Visualise yourself celebrating with your friends or partner for reaching your goal. Where are you? How does it feel?
